Trend Strength
Compares the average size of up moves with down moves, on a scale from -100 to 100.
Trend Strength compares the size of recent up moves with the size of recent down moves and puts the balance on one scale from -100 to 100. It answers a simple question: over the last 14 bars, which side has moved price further?
How it works
On every bar, the change from the previous close is split in two: a rise counts on the up side, a fall on the down side. Each side is averaged over the last 14 bars. The difference between the two averages is divided by their sum, so the result is a share rather than a price: 100 means that every move in the window was up, -100 that every move was down, and zero that both sides were the same size.
Because the reading is a share, it can be compared across symbols and periods. A reading of 40 means that up moves were larger by the same proportion on a 15-minute chart as on a daily one.
Reading the chart
The indicator is drawn in its own pane below the price chart. Hover over an item below to see it.
- Blue line: the strength reading, from -100 to 100.
- Grey line: the zero level, where up and down moves were the same size.
Settings
- Length
- 14
- The number of bars averaged on each side. A shorter length reacts sooner and changes more often.
Limits and points to note
- The reading measures the balance of past moves. It does not forecast the next bar.
- Only closes are used. A bar with a long wick and a small change from close to close counts as a small move.
- In a quiet market both averages are small, so a single larger bar can move the reading sharply.
- When price does not change for 14 bars, both averages are zero and no reading is drawn.
Her tarafın son 14 bardaki ortalaması alınır.
